Rowardennan to Inverarnan

Today is recognised as the hardest of the West Highland Way. The distance is 14 miles of which the first 7 are reasonable. However the last 7 are extremely slow going. It is hard to make progress because you are on a thin track alongside Loch Lomond. You are very much clambering up and down over rocks and trees. This goes on mile after mile. At the end of today's walk I was totally shattered and just wanted to get warm and sleep.

Drymen to Rowardennan

We expected rain and we got it

A great photo by Paul of me looking out across the wilderness
This struck me as a bit of Monty Python humour :-)

Milngavie to Drymen

Milngavie and our start of the West Highland Way

After a full but healthy? breakfast we deposited our ongoing bags with the courier. Then day 1 of our West Highland Way walk began. The weather all day couldn't have been better, cool with the sun shining. We overtook and outpaced other walkers who were in pairs and groups on the same route. The scenery although nice hasn't blossomed into all its glory yet. At just over 7 miles we bypassed the Glengoyne Distillery (probably a good decision?) and had a well earned break at the Beach Tree benches. After a further 5 miles we reached our destination Drymen and our accommodation the Drymen Inn.

It's is 4am and my (Dave) hotel room neighbours are so inconsiderate. Their TV has been on until now. The walls must be paper thin. Now they are talking.

5am. It took a bang on the wall to shut then up. Damage done though. Little or no sleep. It's getting light. It would be a good time to start walking if breakfast had not already been paid for. It looks wet out there.

Birmingham to Glasgow to Milngavie

Birmingham to Glasgow

An early morning trip from Birmingham Airport with Flybe to Glasgow. A coffee (of course) in Starbucks. A bus journey to Milngavie (pronounced Mil-Guy) and our first nights stay at a Premier Inn. Culminating in a nice meal and ice-cream at the Beefeater next door.

Travelling to Glasgow in the morning

I'm looking forward to meeting Paul at Birmingham Airport in the morning for our flight up to Glasgow. Having to be there two hours early means time to relax with a croissant and a coffee.
